2014 ADDY Judges

Stephen Curry
Creative Director
Lewis Communications | Birmingham

For the past decade Stephen has led creative in the Birmingham office of Lewis Communications. Under his watch Lewis has captured 3 National ADDYs, 3 District ADDY Best of Shows, Graphis 100 Best in Advertising, as well as inclusion in the 2013 CA Advertising and Design Annuals.

Stephen began his advertising career in Atlanta, where his campaign to change the Georgia state flag captured global media attention and was honored by the One Show. He then moved to Boston to work with Hill Holliday on Dunkin Donuts, Fleet Bank, Edison Beer and The Boston Globe.

A fair number of the nation’s top writers once studied under Stephen at the Creative Circus and Portfolio Center. Stephen's work has also received recognition from Archive, ShowSouth, Graphis, and the Hatch Awards for New England Advertising, for such diverse brands as Tiffin Motorhomes, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, and ALFA Insurance.

When not creating good work, he’s mildly obsessed with food and wine (especially Argentine malbec), the Caribbean island of Vieques, and airline tickets to anywhere.

Dean Mary Dean
Founder, Chief Creative Officer

In January 2007, after 5 years as VP/Creative Director at Publicis USA leading the highly successful Curves business, Mary walked away to pursue a very personal goal: creating KickSkirt?. KickSkirt is one of the first agencies in the world dedicated to helping smart brands connect with women by connecting the dots between great research and inspried, female-led creative.

During her twenty plus years in advertising, Mary's work has garnered creative awards including Clios, Addys, The One Show, and Communication Arts. More notably, she has twice won highest honors from The AWNYs for contributing to the positive portrayal of women. But what Mary really excels at is getting results. TheGold and Silver EFFIES for her work on Curves is proof that she not only connects with women, but also motivates them. While building the Levi's Jeans For Women brand, her campaign flooded Levi's 1-800 lines.

Mary is that rare creative person who is a stickler for good ROI. Her work ethic and talent have benefited the likes of McDonalds, Celestial Seasonings, Levis, Clorox, and GlaxoSmithKline among others. She has spent years at some of the top agencies throughout the world including Leo Burnett, Chiat/Day and Foote Cone and Belding.

Mary lives in Denver with her husband Steve, son Cal (18), daughter Isabel (15), a dog named Ruby, and a bird that repeats words it shouldn't.

Reid Holmes
Executive Creative Director
Campbell Mithun, Minneapolis

Reid is a true believer in the power of a big idea to galvanize a company and give a brand differentiation and meaning across platforms and in culture. He believes the best work has always converged around a simple emotional human truth. And every day, more exciting and amazing technologies appear to express a brand's story in new and interesting ways. Reid is the co-architect of H&R Block’s highly regarded and very successful "You Got People" campaign. Called "the best selling idea we’ve seen in 5 years” by AdAge magazine. Reid's work has also been recognized by most every industry creative award show – including Effie’s, Cannes, Communication Arts, the Jay Chiat Planning Awards and The One Show. Reid lives in Minnesota with his wife Katy and three young children. (And a guinea pig named Spike.)

Tug McTighe
VP, Executive Creative Director
Callahan Creek

Tug tries to do something great every day. In his role as Executive Creative Director, he’s got a hand in every piece of work that comes out of the agency. Fortunately, he’s only got one speed: ON. During a long and varied career in and around the Kansas City market, he’s worked to turn wheat into flour for such clients as Westar, Elanco, Nudges Wholesome Dog Treats, Free State Brewing Company, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Sprint, CommunityAmerica Credit Union, Boulevard Brewing Company, Captain D’s Seafood and the Coleman Company. In even further past agency lives he’s worked on a ton of different accounts –including, but certainly not limited to, Caterpillar, Birch Telecom, International Trucks, the Missouri Lottery and Sonic Drive-In.

If fancy advertising awards mean anything to you, he has won a lot of them during his career. His work has been featured in national shows such as the CA Ad Annual, AAF National Addys and the Clio Shortlist. He’s won more than 50 Addys locally, including two Best of Show Awards as well as Best of TV, Best of Radio and Best of Print. If he ever gets out of advertising he plans to write intensely personal (read: bad) poetry and watch his kids grow up in the mountains of Colorado.

Of further interest (perhaps) is the fact that Tug co-created and co-hosts American Copywriter, one of the first and most-popular advertising-themed podcast-blog-things ever. Tug is also a well-known speaker on the subject of marketing and advertising creativity. He talks to Ad Clubs, students and other professionals around the country on a regular basis.
